In the evening of 14 November 1944 four Tempests of No. 501 Squadron scrambled from Bradwell Bay for incoming V-1s. F/L Burton made an attack without result. Three of the Tempests had to land at Castle Camps due to bad weather at Bradwell Bay.

The fourth Tempest (SD-S EJ551) suffered engine failure and F/O Joseph A.L. Johnson (RCAF 18070) bailed out safely 1 mile east of Standon. Below are some parts recovered of EJ551.
